Modern and contemporary furniture – knowing the difference

What we think – what it is?

When speaking of interior design, the words “contemporary” and “modern” are often thrown around as if they were interchangable. Hearing those words, we always think of chic decors with geometrical shapes and minimal ornamentation, and we usually think whichever word we use to describe that is correct. That couldn’t be further from the truth however.

The word “modern” denotes a specific period of time. Modernism is used  to describe furniture designed in a style established in the period between 1920 and 1950. It’s a specific style with an established look that is unchanging. On the other hand, what is defined as “contemporary” is ever-changing. It is the style of the moment – contemporary designs describes an ever-fluctucating state, a multitude of designs that constantly change in relevancy as time marches on. The contemporary design of one decade can be fundamentally different in style from a contemporary design of another.

The distinction stems from the fact that in the field of interior design, the term “Modern” is actually a shorthand for “Mid Century Modern”. The style is distinct due to its clean, simple, geometrical interior designs. It involves a lot of wood, leather, metal, and other natural materials, as well as newer and more artificially manufactured materials like plywood and plastic. The placement of the furniture is also very distinct, as a lot of it is raised and spread out, making the space of the interior very open, which is later countered with area rugs or bare floors made of a nice wood. Colour is used very sparingly.

Contemporary designs, on the other hand, are what is in vogue right now. Because of this, there is no one style that can be used to define it, as it all depends on the time period, area, etc. Current contemporary design usually work around combining nature with the interior, or letting the outdoors in. Large windows, unique shapes, and integration of the surrounding environments are what is currently the most trendy style to have in your home. But though it is called contemporary now, in a few years, this style will get a new name, while another will be named “contemporary”. That is the fundamental difference between those two terms.
